Smith-Karng Architecture, Inc. was created in 2001 with Sue Smith as principal Designer and Architect. Smith-Karng Architecture employs five people and is dedicated soley to Healthcare Architecture.

The predecessor of Smith-Karng Architecture Inc. was ESS Architects, with Sue Smith as president for 16 years. ESS Architects employed more than 50 people; in 1999 Ms. Smith sold this larger practice in order to preside over healthcare projects personally.

Smith-Karng and ESS Architects have provided design services for Saint Joseph Health System, Providence Health System, Kaiser Permanente, CHW Health System, Stanford Medical Center and UCSF Medical Center.
